Supplements for Coughs, Colds and Flu

We were repeatedly warned that viruses would be plentiful once COVID restrictions, such as masks and social distancing, were removed. And this, unlike much of the other information that came out during COVID, turned out to be very accurate.

As someone with a weak immune system (likely due to years of antibiotics and mold exposure), I admit I was pretty okay with keeping the germ-spewing to a minimum. But now, since the germs are flying freely once again, I am working overtime to protect myself and keep my family from getting sick. My daily preventative daily routine includes Vitamin C, Zinc and Vitamin D. If I have been exposed to someone who was sick, all bets are off and I start throwing everything but the kitchen sink at my immune system. Here are my favorites, compiled from recommendations of functional medicine doctors and my own trial and error:

For immune protection after exposure:

  • Vitamin C, 1000-4000 mg as tolerated. (Buffered C may help offset effects on the stomach.)

  • Essential Defense (Metagenics), a blend of Chinese herbs meant to prevent illness.

  • Vitamin D, 5-10,000 IU.

  • Zinc, at least 30 mg.

  • Elderberry (this comes in many forms, from lozenges to syrup to tea).

  • Echinacea (available as supplements or tea).

  • Pure Defense (Pure) combines vitamins with herbs for complete immune support.

  • Astragalus (available as supplements or tea).

  • Kids Immune Cherry Gummies (Garden of Life) include vitamins and herbs in a gummy form for children (or adults).

To help alleviate symptoms:

  • Sinatrol (OrthoMolecular), a blend of herbs that helps thin mucus and relieve congestion.

  • Sinuplex (Metagenics), a blend of herbs that supports respiratory function.

  • N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) helps thin mucus and is a potent antioxidant.

  • Advanced Lung and Bronchial Support (Dr. Sinatra) is an herbal blend that helps keep airways open and reduces inflammation in the respiratory tract. (As someone prone to pneumonia, I start taking this at the first sign of cough/chest heaviness.)

  •  GingerTussin (Metagenics) is an effective, natural cough syrup.

  • Bronchial Wellness for Kids (Gaia) includes essential oils and herbs for cough and sore throats.

  • Steam, ideally enhanced with essential oils such as eucalyptus or lemon. (This is a favorite of mine, as it feels good but also helps relieve symptoms.)

To prevent escalation:

  • Candi-Bactin AR, a natural antibiotic, two tablets twice a day for 7-10 days.

  • Candi-Bactin BR, a natural antibiotic, two tablets twice a day for 7-10 days.

  • Immune Active (Metagenics) was created during COVID to help suppress cytokines and calm the immune system.

  • Cytokine Suppress (Life Extension) supports a healthy immune system response.

Hydration is extremely important…hot soups and teas, or cold smoothies, can be very soothing. Rest is also necessary but can be hard to attain with active symptoms. (A wedge pillow may help with sinus drainage at night.) And eucalyptus balm (either natural or as good old fashioned Vicks) can help with congestion and chest pain. Colds and flus can take up to two weeks to resolve, so be kind to yourself.

And if you feel you need to see a doctor, it is probably a good idea to do so. Virtual appointments have made it easier than ever.

As with all supplements, it is advised to consult with your doctor, and start one at a time and build up to recommended amounts slowly. All of the above supplements are available on my Wellevate site at 25% off.
